Open Everyday Between Now and Christmas
Are You Ready?
It’s a question that seems to pop up everywhere this time of year. For so long, it used to send me into a whirlwind of panic—there was always too much to do and never enough time. But as the years go by, I’ve come to realise that the magic of this season isn’t about how organised we are or how much we tick off the list. It’s about those irreplaceable moments: sharing stories around the table, laughter echoing through the house, and simply being present with the people who matter most.
At Elaia, we’ve been reminded of this more than ever as we welcome back familiar faces—long-time friends, family flying in from interstate or overseas, and loyal customers who’ve been part of our journey for nearly three decades. It feels like family coming home to us, and we’re so grateful to be part of these special moments.
This year, we’ve extended our trading hours to make space for your reunions and festive catch-ups. While we’ll be taking a well-deserved break on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day, we’d love to host your celebrations leading up to those days and after. What Do I Bring?
It’s the classic holiday dilemma, isn’t it? On one hand, you’re thrilled to be off hosting duty — this year, you get to relax, soak in the festive vibes, and enjoy someone else’s beautifully prepared feast. But on the other hand, showing up empty-handed? That’s not your style. You want to bring something special, something that stands out, sparks conversation, and is enjoyed by everyone at the table.
At Elaia, we’ve got you covered with thoughtful, crowd-pleasing options that make it easy to show up with something truly memorable. We’re here to help you shine as the ultimate guest.
Let us take the guesswork out of your “what do I bring” dilemma so you can focus on what really matters—creating beautiful memories with your loved ones.
Dreaming of a Greek Christmas
Christmas is a time to gather with loved ones, but as families grow, spread out, and evolve, it’s not always possible to have everyone under one roof. Our children grow up and create their own traditions, some move interstate or overseas, and our parents grow older, making these gatherings more precious than ever.
For me, originally from Hobart, spending quality time with my family—especially my mum, who is now 89—is something I treasure deeply. Just last weekend, we celebrated an early Christmas in Hobart with my side of the family. My son Jorge, my niece, and her family flew in to join us, and together, we had four generations under one roof—a beautiful chaos filled with laughter, memories, and love.
For decades, my mum was the heart of these gatherings, effortlessly cooking for up to 100 people during family celebrations. While she can no longer take on such a task herself, she still leads with the same determination. This time, under her watchful eye, she guided me, Perry, our younger son John and my nephews (all accomplished Chefs) as we prepared her traditional recipes: stuffed turkey, her legendary skordalia, dolmades, her signature broad bean and artichoke salad and much more.
These recipes aren’t just dishes—they’re a part of our family’s soul. While I’ve written them down to preserve our cultural heritage, I also took the opportunity to record Mum as she stirred, tasted, and shared her secret tips. It’s these little unwritten touches—the pinch of something extra, the careful way she stirs—that truly make the dishes taste like Mum made them or Gran made them.
Food is the glue that holds us together, a reminder of who we are and where we come from. It’s the taste of love, history, and belonging—all served on a plate. By capturing these recipes and her wisdom, I hope to carry on the legacy my parents created, ensuring that food continues to bring our family together, generation after generation.
As we wrap up another wonderful year, we want to express how much it means to us to have you along for the journey. Your enthusiasm for our evolving menu as we embrace more of our Greek heritage, your excitement for the return of our Sunday trading hours, and your love for bringing the Elaia breakfast and brunch vibe back to Charles Street have truly inspired us.
It’s been a joy getting to know you, sharing stories, and being part of your lives. You’ve become more than just guests—you’re part of the Elaia family.
From all of us—Ritsa, Perry, and the entire Elaia team—we wish you a festive season filled with warmth, joy, and beautiful moments. May the New Year bring health, happiness, and countless reasons to celebrate.
